red-hot-chilli said...: I noticed the 'German' pic is saved under 'uber alles'. These are NOT, as is commonly believed the lyrics to the German national anthem! This, the first verse, was abolished after WWII, and only the THIRD verse of the poem by Hoffman von Hallersleben (written in the 1850s) were kept. This THIRD verse goes (in English): 'Unity, justice and freedom for the German people ...', etc. This - and only this! - THIRD verse is today's national anthem.

FYI: All three verses of von Hallersleben's poem were declared Germany's national anthem after the founding of the German empire in 1871, but after the atrocities Germany committed in WWII, the first 2 verses were no longer deemed appropriate, hence they were subsequently abolished.
